Next we hired a narrow boat, the Silver Lynx, for a week (49K)
You drive it yourself. Its like renting a motorhome. The swans welcomed us to the canals. (49K)
At a top speed of 4 mph, I found the life style very relaxing (49K)
But you did have to drive it all day long. Often in the rain, Outside. (52K)
and you had to open and close the lock gates yourself. (51K)
and you had to crank the "paddles" up and down with your "windlass" to let water in and out. (46K)
We took turns with driving and operating the locks. Until Mary lost control of her windlass. (44K)
It spun away and careened into the canal. Thereafter we specialized. She drove and I did locks. (50K)
The narrow boat went through tunnels. (45K)
It went by small bridges that we raised and lowered using our trusty windlass [Large Wrench] (49K)
It went over village streets on aqueducts. (49K)
It went over the River Dee on the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. (49K)
The aqueduct has no safety rail on the drivers side on the way to Llangollen, Wales. See me hanging on. (45K)
The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is 121 feet high. (33K)
At the end of the day we tied up the narrow boat, shut down the engine and had a glass of wine. (48K)
Then we would look for a PUB for dinner. (51K)
Later in the evening I would fix us some tea. (50K)
We would watch the news and then read until bedtime. (46K)
We turned around at Llangollen where we snaped this picture of Thomas the Tank Engine. (49K)
Returning over the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. (48K)
Our next stop Christ Church in Oxford. This is the statue of Mercury in the courtyard (49K)
There we joined an interesting mix of people in the summer school "Oxford Experience" program (47K)
We had lunch and dinner in the great hall. We were told it was in the Harry Potter movies. (50K)
I even had to wear a coat and tie for the formal meals. (48K)
Touring the grounds that were instrumental in the children's book "Alice in Wonderland" (49K)
While touring Oxford we were shown this interesting tree with interconnecting branches (49K)
Next we stopped at Stratford on Avon to pay our respects to William Shakespeare (49K)
The next day we were off to St. Briavels Castle Youth Hostel. (54K)
Just before returning to the US we visited the used book shops at Hay-on-Wye (48K)
