Here we are in Copenhagen! We wandered around. (38K)
We found the Youth Hostel. (38K)
We wandered into this demonstration of DESPERATE MIDWIVES. They explained they were demonstrating for better care for pregnant women. (41K)
And we bought postcards. Notice that Europeans take bicycle commuting seriously. (49K)
Leaving Copenhagen we didn't expect to be looking at water. Imagine our suprise to find ourselves on a train ferry. (31K)
Hamburg - Beer with dinner of course because you're in Germany. The beer is really good! (30K)
The next day we arrived at Luzern via the night train from Hamburg. The next train (with 3 sections of cogs) took us to Interlaken. (69K)
The next train dropped us at Lauterbrunnen (50K)
From Lauterbrunnen we took the post bus to Stechelberg (38K)
From Stechelberg we took the cable car to Gimmelwald and got to see this spectacular waterfall. (36K)
Looking down at Stechelberg on the way up! (35K)
Finally we arrived at Gimmelwald where our hotel was. Guess what? It's among the buildings up the hill. You walk the last part. It's 108 steps! Mary counted them. (26K)
But it was worth all the work. It was the greatest hotel!! (44K)
On a clear day you can see Jungfrau from Gimmelwald. It's advertised as the "Top of Europe" (34K)
Of course when we arrived it looked like this. That lower cascade of white is an avalanche. You could see and hear them all day. (21K)
We walked to Murren which is a tourist trap. The walk was very nice, very rural. (22K)
The next day we visited Jungfrau. Getting there by a great cog train. (46K)
Jungrau was like Disneyland. Very crowded with kids. It even has an Ice Palace and lots and lots of shops. It was not so packed outside on the Observatory (27K)
Here is a postcard showing the Observatory and the peak. (22K)
The next day we took the cable car up to Schilthorn. (21K)
This was one of the highlights of Switzerland. Far better than Jungfrau. (36K)
No crowds! just this crow. (36K)
A very nice lunch at the world's first revolving restaurant Piz Gloria (25K)
The next day we traveled to Montreux by way of Spiez. After a lot of searching we finally found the hostel. (30K)
We spent the next day trying to see Mount Blanc. This is the Mount Blanc-Chamonix station and we couldn't even get a pic of the name. (10K)
Having failed to see Mount Blanc because of rain and clouds, we did the next best thing. We bought this postcard. (39K)
The following day was more rewarding. We rode the ferry around Lake Geneva. This is the stop at Lausanne. (32K)
Then we toured the Chateau de Chillon just along the shore from our hostel and took this pic from the tower. (18K)
The next day we took a train to Zermatt. Took this picture of the town square. Got to the hostel early and checked our luggage. (21K)
We took the cog railroad in this postcard up to Gornergrat, above Zermatt, it's Switzerland's highest open-air train station. The Gornergrat Bahn electric railway opened for business in 1898 (12K)
But as you may have guessed this is the way we saw Gornergrat! (15K)
They even had this St. Bernard on hand equipped with a Brandy jug in case we got lost due to poor visibility. (31K)
On a good day the place is supposed to look like this. (48K)
It rained then snowed through the night. The next morning Zermatt looked like this! (38K)
From our hostel window we could see the Matterhorn! (35K)
We took the Glacier Express out of Zermatt heading for San Moritz (32K)
The good weather held and we had a really wonderful trip! (25K)
This is Gotthard Pass. (27K)
This is Oberwald (31K)
Unfortunately the trip was marred by
the very poor ticketing service of the Swiss Rail System. If you are interested in the gory details, Click
here
Despite the disfunctional Swiss rail system, we made it to St. Moritz (31K)
It was very nice there. We went hiking in the snow covered hills. (23K)
And around the frozen lake. (33K)
Mary got to stick her foot into the icy lake. (32K)
Next day we bused to Lugano. We went via Maloja Pass (5960 feet) which had very tight hairpin turns. (40K)
We arrived in the late afternoon and had dinner outside with the crowd. (27K)
The following day we took a boat ride on Lago di Lugano. We even found time to ascend San Salvatore via cable car. (35K)
Looking toward Milano from Lugano from San Salvatore. Sounds kinda Italian doesn't it! (17K)
Looking down at Lugano from San Salvatore (29K)
Our next stop was Bellinzona. Our Hostel was pretty fancy. (33K)
Hiked around the castles in Bellinzona (30K)
Our last stop in Switzerland was Luzern. This is our Hostel.(28K)
Once there we promptly made our way to Pilatus. We like to get above things. (28K)
There we found a guy playing an Alpen horn (29K)
That's me on the Chapel Bridge at Luzern. Mary remembered the bridge from an earlier life. (25K)
Switzerland had been fun. Mary is dragging her suitcase and I've strapped mine on. We moved on to Luxembourg City. (33K)
